An exciting opportunity is available for an individual to manage and oversee the effective and efficient delivery of the Programme’s infrastructure component, with a focus on schools and ECD sites.
The position is part-time and based on a capped number of days per month. The contract is for 12 months and is renewable based on performance and funding for another 12 months. The project manager will report directly to the JET AASA Programme Manager. Dotted line reporting and communication will be maintained with the client.
 
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Manage and oversee the planning as well as delivery of the infrastructure programme according to scope and plan
  • Develop and maintain a database of preferred local suppliers in each of AASA Operations
  • Manage and quality assure the work of service providers/ suppliers according to plan and cost
  • Support the negotiations/discussions and contracting of suppliers to ensure quality delivery of services as per plan and cost
  • Oversee and support the contracting process of service providers/ suppliers
  • Develop strong relationships with AASA Business Units and Operations (BU/Operations)
  • Develop together with the respective BU/Operations a stakeholder engagement plan, and provide support to implementation. Including, facilitating and leading engagements as per plan
  • Develop and maintain a risk register, with the appropriate mitigation plans and appropriate controls implemented proactively until resolved
  • Manage and monitor the appropriate implementation of communications and escalation protocols
  • Ensure up to date records are maintained at all times
  • Monitor and report on progress on a weekly and monthly basis, with reports produced
  • Review the supplier/service provider reports with analysis synthesised into reports to AASA Senior
  • Leadership
  • Work closely and effectively with all Programme staff
 
Education, Language and Qualification
  • Relevant degree or diploma in construction management, civil/structural engineering or quantity surveying
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to communicate in languages local to AASA Operations is an advantage
 
Essential Knowledge and Experience
  • At least 4-8 years working in the construction industry in a community/development context
  • Experience managing school and or ECD infrastructure projects is an advantage
  • Proven track record of managing and supporting large scale complex interventions
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of project management techniques and tools
  • Knowledge of the infrastructure norms and standards by the Department of Education and Social Development
  • Knowledge of the relevant government infrastructure legislation and policies
  • Experience of developing a quality assurance mechanism to track quality delivery of projects to plan and cost
  • Experience of developing strategy around how existing government infrastructure initiatives can be used to complement the efforts of the Programme
  • A valid driver’s licence

About the AASA Programme
The Anglo American South Africa (AASA) Education Programme is a core part of the Anglo-American’s Sustainable Mining Plan and is part of AASA’s commitment to being an active corporate citizen that engages with the real issues and challenges facing South Africa. The AASA Education Programme is aligned to the policy and strategy of the South African Department of Basic Education, notably the “Action Plan 2019: Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2030” and the “Strategic Plan of the DBE 2014-2019”.

The focus of the AASA Education Programme is on early childhood learning and a “whole school” systemic approach for primary and secondary schools. The purpose is to facilitate a significant positive impact on the educational outcomes of children in the selected Early Childhood Development (ECD) sites and the schools local to the Anglo-American Business Units and Operations.
The Programme will be implementing minimum infrastructure support at the schools and ECD sites. The goal is to provide infrastructure upgrades to ensure sites are safe and conducive to learning.
