Invitation to the workshop on Trust, Capacity and Accountability in South African primary schools

On the 24th October 2022, JET Education Services, in partnership with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and the UK Open University (OU), will host a live roundtable discussion on the results of the Trust, Capacity and Accountability study conducted in South African primary schools.

About the workshop

You are invited to a virtual workshop to deliberate on findings at the close of a four-year research project conducted by JET and researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and the UK Open University (OU) on ‘Trust, capacity and accountability to improve learning outcomes in South African primary schools.’ Trust and accountability, along with capacity, are critical factors that impact education reforms.

Purpose of this workshop

  • To share the outcomes of this research project with an international audience
  • To engage with education system leaders, policymakers, practitioners, and school governors
  • To interact with and receive inputs of researchers working in this field

  • About the workshop presentations

    • The papers address the relationship between trust and accountability in South African primary schools based on a systems perspective from school level upwards
    • The papers focus on different facets of trust and accountability relationships in South Africa relating to:
-Teacher trust, professionalism and professional accountability in South Africa: bridging the trust gap
-Integrating trust, accountability and capacity: the challenges of leadership in South African education system reform
-Making sense of trust relationships between parents, caregivers and teachers in South African primary schools
    • The papers illuminate how highly unequal social and economic conditions impact trust and accountability relationships in schooling

    • The discussion will include contributions from Melanie Ehren, Professor in the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Educational Studies, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; Jacqueline Baxter, Professor of Public Policy and Management, Open University; Zaahedah Vally, Researcher JET Education Services; and Andrew Paterson, Research Associate, JET Education Services.

A paper based on the study uses South African examples to discuss the relationship between trust and accountability and the role of trust in promoting effective accountability, which in turn can enable learning improvements. Entitled “Accountability and trust: Two sides of the same coin?” the paper, authored by Ehren, Paterson & Baxter (2019) can be accessed here:  Accountability and trust: Two sides of the same coin?
