About
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) undertakes an annual systemic assessment of Language and Mathematics of all Grade 3, 6 and 9 learners in public schools in the Province. Including subsidised independent schools and a number of non-subsidised schools who participate voluntarily, over 1 400 schools and over 240 000 learners are involved each year. Assessment takes place over an intensive 10 day period at the begininning of the fourth school term, and the marking of the almost half a million scripts proceeds immediately thereafter. In total, just under 1 700 people are employed during the course of project delivery. Analysis and reporting of results are concluded before the end of the year; further analysis of item functioning is reported on in the final project report delivered to the client in March of the following year. Outside of the annual Matric examinations, the WCED Systemic Testing is the largest single standardised assessment activity in the country. For the next three years of testing (2025-2027) JET will be working closely with its consortium partner, Darkdata to deliver a service of the highest standard and rigour.
