We are hiring: WCED Chief Markers
JET Education Services seeks to appoint on a short-term contract Chief Markers to oversee the marking of scripts in this year’s Grade 3,6 & 9 Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Systemic Testing. The following Two Chief Marker positions are available:
GRADE 3: ISIXHOSA HOME LANGUAGE
GRADE 6: AFRIKAANS HOME LANGUAGE
Minimum Requirements
- An REQV Level 14 qualification specialising in the subject i.e. four-year BEd, or a Degree plus PGCE.
- Experience of teaching the subject at the relevant school level, or at a tertiary institution.
- For the Language Chief Marker, the applicant must be a first language speaker of the language.
- Previous experience as a Chief Marker or Senior Marker in any systemic or matric marking environment is a minimum requirement.
- Not employed by the WCED for the duration of the contract.
- Resident in the Cape Town Metropole.
- A South African ID.
Required skills
To be appointed to the position of Chief Marker requires the following skills:
- Task-orientated and able to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment and with a diverse group of people Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), and use of the internet and email
Job Description:
A Chief Marker is appointed to take overall responsibility for overseeing the marking of the scripts associated with that subject and grade. The Chief Marker will report directly to the Languages Subject Coordinator, and is also answerable through the Mark Centre Admin Coordinator and the Mark Centre Manager.
Whereas the appointment of the Chief Marker will be from 01 October 2026 – 30 November 2026, the active marking session will commence with pre-marking on the 08 October, with marking anticipated to be completed no later than 13 November 2026.
Duties:
- Attend to all requested meetings prior to the commencement of marking convened by Mark Centre Admin Coordinator and Mark Centre Manager.
- Assist in the recruitment of Senior Markers and Markers prior to marking.
- Participate in pre-marking of scripts, and attend the memorandum finalisation and training meetings.
- Be responsible for the training of the Senior Markers and Markers.
- Be thoroughly familiar with the Marking Training Manual and all associated marking protocols.
- During marking, be present at the marking venue from 07h00 to 17h00 every day of the week.
- Upon request, be available to oversee marking on one or more Saturdays.
- Ensure that the Senior Markers and markers strictly adhere to the finalised and signed-off marking memorandum.
- Ensure that Senior Markers moderate 10% of the scripts of each marker reporting to them.
- Moderate and re-moderate scripts at random to ensure that the memorandum is applied consistently across the Senior Markers’ teams.
- Attend a daily debriefing meeting convened by the relevant marking coordinator, and any other meetings called by the Mark Centre Manager.
- Compile daily stats at the request of the Mark Centre Manager.
- Coach any under-performing markers referred to them by the Senior Markers.
- Handle any disciplinary matters arising in consultation with the Mark Centre Manager.
- Report any memorandum issues to the Languages Subject Coordinator.
- Ensure that confidentiality is maintained as per the Non-Disclosure Agreement signed by all markers.
- Motivate and manage the Senior Markers and markers in their team.
- Following the completion of marking, be available to oversee the fixing of any marking errors with selected members of the marking team.
- Participate in a debriefing session at the end of the marking process. Be available for any requested follow-up meetings with WCED.
- As per provided guidelines, compile a Marking Report that includes feedback on test items, learner performance, marker performance and so forth.
The total cost to the company for the duration of the contract period (CTC/all-inclusive) package is between R46 000 - R49 000, depending on the grade being marked.
