We are hiring: WCED Chief Markers

CHIEF MARKERS, WESTERN CAPE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT (WCED) SYSTEMIC TESTING

JET Education Services seeks to appoint on a short-term contract Chief Markers to oversee the marking of scripts in this year’s Grade 3, 6 & 9 Systemic Testing. The following 10 Chief Marker positions are available:

  • Grade 3: English; Afrikaans & Isixhosa First Language; Mathematics
  • Grade 6: English & Afrikaans Language Of Learning & Teaching (Lolt); Mathematics
  • Grade 9: English & Afrikaans Language Of Learning & Teaching (Lolt); Mathematics

    Minimum Requirements
  • An REQV Level 14 qualification specialising in the subject i.e. four-year BEd, or a Degree plus PGCE.
  • Experience of teaching the subject at the relevant school level, or at a tertiary institution.
  • For Language Chief Markers, the applicant must be a first language speaker of the language.
  • Previous experience as a Chief or Senior Marker in the WCED Systemic Testing. An added advantage will be experience as a Chief Marker.
  • Not currently employed by the WCED.
  • Resident in the Cape Town Metropole.
  • A South African ID or a valid work permit in relation to the role.
  • To be appointed to the position of Chief Marker requires the following skills:
  • Task-orientated and able to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and with a diverse group of people.
  • Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), and use of the internet and email

Job Description

  • Attend to all requested meetings prior to the commencement of marking in collaboration with the Marking Centre Admin Coordinator, assist in the recruitment of Senior Markers and Markers prior to marking, engage with the tests instruments and memoranda handed over by the WCED, and write feedback/report with comments.
  • Attend the memorandum finalisation and training meetings.
  • Participate in the training of the Senior Markers and Markers.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the Marking Training Manual and all associated marking protocols.
  • During marking, be on duty for a minimum of eight hours each day.
  • Upon request, be available to oversee marking on one or more Saturdays.
  • Ensures that the Senior Markers and markers strictly adhere to the finalised and signed-off marking memorandum
  • Ensure that Senior Markers moderate 10% of the scripts of each marker reporting to them.
  • Moderate and re-moderate scripts at random to ensure that the memorandum is applied consistently across the Senior Markers’ teams.
  • Attend a daily debriefing meeting convened by the relevant marking co-ordinator, and any other meetings called by the Marking Centre Manager.
  • Compile daily stats at the request of the Marking Centre Manager.
  • Coach any under-performing markers referred to them by the Senior Markers.
  • Handle any disciplinary matters arising in consultation with the Marking Centre Manager.
  • Through the relevant Marking Coordinator, immediately alert WCED Head Office to any memorandum issues that emerge during the marking session.
  • Ensure that confidentiality is maintained as per the Non-Disclosure Agreement signed by all markers
  • Motivate and manage the Senior Markers and markers in their team.
  • Following the completion of marking, be available to oversee the fixing of any marking errors with selected members of the marking team.
  • Participate in a debriefing session at the end of the marking process. Be available for any requested follow-up meetings with WCED.
  • As per provided guidelines, compile a Marking Report that includes feedback on test items, learner performance, marker performance and so forth.

A Chief Marker is appointed to take overall responsibility for overseeing the marking of the scripts associated with that subject and grade. The Chief Marker will report directly to the Marking Coordinator, and is also answerable through the Marking Centre Admin Co-ordinator to the Marking Centre Manager.

Whereas the appointment of the Chief Marker will be from 1 August 2025 – 30 November 2025, the active marking session will commence on Monday, 20 October 2025, with marking anticipated to be completed no later than Friday, 30 November.

Duties:
The total cost to the company for the duration of the contract period (CTC/all-inclusive) package is between R41,000 and up to R48,000, depending on the subject and grade being examined.

All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to independent relevant reference checks before a contract is finalised.
