OPINION PIECE: To the Matric Class of 2025
An opinion piece prepared by Joshua Engelbrecht, Statistician at JET Education Services.
"To the Class of 2025: Congratulations on your historic result! You've done your part.
You studied. You showed up. You pushed through. With an 88% pass rate and all 75 education districts achieving above 80%, this is a milestone moment for South African education. Whatever your individual result today, you've earned the right to take the next step.
South Africa has built pathways for you: universities, TVET colleges, private institutions, skills programmes, learnerships, micro-credentials, or even a second chance at matric. The opportunities exist - they are there.
But here's what the country and its leadership owe you now: a system that actually works to connect you to those opportunities, one that doesn't leave you guessing, searching alone, or falling through the cracks between qualification and opportunity.
To everyone else: The students have done their job. Now it's our turn.
We have the young people. We have the pathways. What's missing is the coordination, the tracking, the follow-through. We need to build a system that provides a bridge from matric to real-world opportunities, that recognises that learning and growth do not stop at any single moment. We need a system that supports continuous development, that does not just celebrate pass rates and lament unemployment rates.
The Class of 2025 deserves better than just our applause. They deserve a system that works for them."
