A Commitment to Impact and Community Development: A Conversation with Phineas Mobayi

Phineas Mobayi, JET Platinum Business Manager, oversees five crucial business units within Anglo-American South Africa (AASA) education programme: Mototolo (Limpopo Province, Sekhukhune East District); Polokwane (Limpopo, Capricorn South), Mogalakwena (Limpopo, Mogalakwena District), Rustenburg (North West: Bojanala District) and Amandelbult (Moses Kotane under Bojanala District). In a recent interview, Phineas sheds light on his work, his passions, and the remarkable achievements of the work he is involved in.

Phineas is passionate about human development, especially the identification, prioritisation and meeting of needs, as well as programmes that are focused on addressing poverty, unemployment and inequality. At the heart of Phineas's work lies the AASA Education Programme, an initiative of the Anglo-American Sustainability Strategy which focuses on early childhood learning and a whole school development (WSD) approach to facilitate a significant positive impact on the educational outcomes of children in schools local to the Anglo-American operations in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Northern Cape.

Phineas's passion for inclusive education is evident in the programmes that he oversees. The AASA education programme emphasises the importance of diversity and the application of pedagogical principles to enhance learner attainment. The programme’s focus is on quality teaching effective school management and the integration of ICT underscoring a comprehensive strategy to drive meaningful change in education.

Phineas's involvement in AASA Education Programme oversight and management highlights his commitment to effecting tangible change. By fostering strategic leadership, stakeholder engagement, and effective management across multiple communities, Phineas ensures that the programme's objectives are met.

Reflecting on past achievements, Phineas highlights the importance of establishing positive relationships with stakeholders, the distribution of ICT devices to schools, and the regular convening of collaborative meetings. Looking to the future, Phineas is excited about new initiatives such as the Eduten schools and the Phase 2 secondary school intervention programme.

Phineas is proud of JET's accomplishments, particularly the organisation's evaluation processes. Noting that JET was one of the first organisations in South Africa to develop significant expertise in the evaluation of education programmes (Mouton, 2010). Phineas commends JET's commitment to staff empowerment, diversity, and research excellence. As JET embarks on a new strategic journey, Phineas emphasises the importance of positioning the organization as a dynamic entity that embraces diversity and evolution. His vision for JET's future is adapting and remaining relevant and impactful in today’s ever-changing landscape.
