Mr NATHAN JOHNSTON was appointed Chairman of the JET Board of Directors with effect from 27 August 2010.

Nathan’s experience in the education sector includes teaching Mathematics, Physical Science and Biology at secondary and teacher training levels in the public sector and being first the Deputy, and then the Principal of Christian Brothers’ College in Kimberley. In 1997 Nathan was appointed Deputy Director of the Catholic Institute of Education and in 1999 became the first lay-person to be appointed as Director. In addition to his educational expertise, Nathan has completed several management and financial management programmes, including the Programme for Management Development at the Harvard Business School and courses in Financial and Management Accounting at the Kennedy School of Government. He is currently a director of CIE Education Services responsible for overall management of the company and also serves as Director of the Catholic Education Trust. He has a strong interest in education policy, developments in school improvement and the funding, financing and long term financial sustainability of schools.

Two new Board members were appointed in March 2011.

MAUD MOTANYANE

Maud is a media consultant, an entrepreneur, and former editor and journalist. She was the founding editor of Tribute Magazine, a lifestyle magazine aimed at the black middleclass and a publication which grew to become the mouthpiece of black opinion and a forum for debate. Maud lived in Europe for some years. While there, she founded Jikelele Media Group, a television programme distribution company, with offices in the United States, Europe and Africa. She retained strong ties with South Africa, and on her return established and ran a successful spa from 2001 to 2007. She was a Board member and shareholder of one of the first empowerment groups, Worldwide African Investment Holdings, and currently holds several directorships including Kagiso Media Group (Chairperson), G4 Security Group (Chairperson), Mr Price Group (Director), Urban Brew Productions (Director). She is also a board member of the Historic School’s Restoration Project, and a trustee of the Catholic Education Trust.

JOHN MICHAEL SAMUEL
John Samuel brings a wealth of experience in the education sector to the JET Board. He has held leadership positions in education for over twenty five years, including: National Director of the South African Committee for Higher Education Trust (SACHED Trust); Head of Education Department of the African National Congress; Deputy Director General for Higher Education in the National Department of Education; Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation; Chief Executive of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls . John has acted as a consultant to major international development organisations such as the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the WK Kellogg Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, UNESCO, UNICEF, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the Department for International Development (UK). His expertise has also been used by the Ministries of Education in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Namibia. He has worked in education institutions at secondary and tertiary levels in Zambia, Ghana, England, and the United States. John has participated in international conferences on Education, African Literature and Organisational Development in over twenty countries and represented South Africa in international forums such as UNESCO, UNICEF, the UN, the Commonwealth of Learning, the World Bank, and the Commission for Africa. He is currently Interim Director of the University of the Free State’s International Institute for Studies in Race, Reconciliation and Social Justice.
