International Day of Education - 24 January

JET Education Services raises awareness on children getting back in school full time, this International Day of Education

International Day of Education is an annual international observance day held on January 24 and is dedicated to education. On December 3, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming January 24 as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for bringing global peace and sustainable development.

Education is key to sustainable development, when it adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015, the international community recognised that education is essential for the success of all 17 of its goals. Sustainable Development Goal 4, in particular, aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030.

Equal Education, Equal Education Law Centre, The Learning Trust, Legal Resources Centre, NASCEE and academics have addressed an open letter to the Ministers of Basic Education, Health, and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs calling for the urgent return to schooling for South African learners or we will create a lost generation.

"The science has changed but the rules haven't, denying learners the right to education it has been more than 18 months since the onset of the pandemic and while the science has changed, the response to schools has remained the same. We cannot continue to allow our children to suffer by having inflexible and detrimental approaches in response to COVID. We implore you to work co-operatively and act swiftly to protect the best interests of our children and their right to education. With every day lost we move closer to the creation of a lost generation." Read the full article here
