Applications open for Commonwealth young researcher challenge
The Commonwealth is co-launching a project to help young researchers examine the impact of COVID-19 on education systems.
The Secretariat has teamed-up with the non-profit organisation, JET Education services, to launch the ‘#OpenUpYourThinking’ project.

Unique opportunity for young researchers

The scheme offers young researchers a unique opportunity to work under the guidance of experienced researchers to examine the impact of coronavirus on education services in Commonwealth countries.
Researchers under the age of 35 from member countries are invited to apply. The challenge, running from 8 June to 10 July, will be conducted virtually and feature 10 different work streams.
These include looking at how governments are positioning and supporting public institutions such as school systems, how low-cost digital solutions can be used and how higher education institutions are working to build their resilience.
Participants will contribute to shaping responses to the stressors and disruptions facing education systems using an evidence-based approach. Real time facts and findings from the challenge will be shared with decision makers and stakeholders in the education field to build into their COVID-19 responses.

Value of young people

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland said:
“I encourage young researchers from Commonwealth member countries and who have relevant skills to apply for this valuable opportunity to help us understand how COVID-19 is affecting our education systems and how we can work together to tackle its impacts.
“We expect the project to demonstrate the value young people bring to the development of research capacity, particularly when relating directly to present and very pressing national, regional and global priorities such as these.”

COVID-19 impact on schools

Over the past couple of months, schools have been closed in most Commonwealth countries. Globally, the pandemic has affected more than 776.7 million children, their parents and teachers.
There are signs in many low income countries that COVID-19 school closures will have a lasting impact on increasing inequality, especially where there were pre-existing inequalities.

The deadline for applications is 7 June 2020.
