Meet Jiawen Jiang: our UPenn intern
JET annually facilitates an internship programme with the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), USA. As part of the programme this year, we also welcomed Jiawen Mae Jiang. Jiawen was born and raised in China, currently living in Philadelphia. Jiawen is a first-year graduate student at UPenn, studying International Educational Development.
She joined JET due to her passion for education.“I believe education is fundamental to empowering individuals and improving communities,” she explains. “JET has a remarkable history of adapting to the evolving needs of South Africa’s public education system since 1992. I am drawn to JET because of its integrated and evidence-based approaches.”
During her internship, she will be working on three big projects, supporting the proposal development, data analysis, and fieldwork coordination. Jiawen views her internship at JET as both a professional and personal growth opportunity. “JET’s wide range of projects across key education areas offers a unique opportunity to gain diverse and practical experience,” she adds. With plans to become a teacher, she finds the experience valuable for understanding education systems and developing skills to support learners.
Jiawen is intrigued by JET’s current strategic transformation. “Traditionally, many companies in China have a strict pyramid-shaped hierarchy, where employees at lower levels rarely communicate directly with top management. In contrast, JET is moving toward a flatter, circle-based structure that encourages people to work together across departments based on their skills and interests, not just their job titles. This approach helps break down traditional barriers, supports employee development, and creates a more inclusive and efficient workplace. It’s exciting to see an organisation actively working toward becoming more adaptable and people-centred,” she adds.
Her overall experience of South Africa has been positive. She enjoys the friendly and open atmosphere and the ease of communication, even with senior leaders. Colleagues have been supportive, sharing aspects of South African culture and local dishes, which have helped her adapt quickly. Outside work, Jiawen has explored places such as the Lion Safari Park and Ukutula Lodge Game Reserve. “These experiences have given me a deeper appreciation for South Africa’s natural beauty and wildlife,” comments Jiawen.
We’re excited to have Jiawen contribute her skills and passion to JET. With her curiosity and commitment to education and transformation, and her unique global perspective, we’re confident she will leave a lasting impact as a JETsetter. Welcome, Jiawen!
