Call for nominations for NGOs Steering Committee

Non governmental organisations, both pre- and post- 1994, have played an important role in South African society. However, with South Africa’s changed political circumstances as well as changes in the economic climate and funding environment that began post-1994, the role of NGOS has changed. NGOS have needed to adapt to the new environment and some have taken on the task of supporting the government to implement its transformational policies, particularly those articulated in the National Development Plan. Against this background, the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) organised an Education NGO Leadership Summit in order to “reflect on the progress made by education NGOs in implementing the education goals and objectives of the NDP”.

The summit reached the consensus that a plan is needed to chart the way forward for NGOs in the education sector and that the inputs made to the summit should be thoroughly interrogated and used as the basis for such a plan. It was agreed that the NECT would coordinate the setting up of a smaller committee that would take the implementation of the recommendations forward. JET has been requested by the NECT to coordinate this process, which incudes establishing an “Education NGOs Steering Committee”.

Note that a nomination process is underway for individuals to serve on the Steering Committee for an initial six-month period, after which the role and function of the Committee will be reviewed. Members will be representative of the sector and the work of the Committee will be shared with all concerned.

  • The deadline for nominations is 15 October 2016 (not 15 September) and should be sent to ktracey@jet.org.za.
