Primary Teacher Education Project (PrimTEd)
The Primary Teacher Education (PrimTEd) project is a four year project of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) that forms a part of a suite of projects in the Teaching and Learning Development Capacity Improvement Programme (TLDCIP) that covers areas of Primary teacher education, TVET and Community College lecturer education, Inclusive education and Early Childhood care and education. It is managed by the Chief-Directorate for Teaching and Learning Development in the DHET. The programme is supported by the European Union.
Projects
The JET clearinghouse is a portal that organises, collates and presents JET Education Services flagship multi stakeholder projects. These projects are intended to provide various audiences involved in the education sector with evidence based research which can be used to increase the impact of educational interventions.
National Working Committee
The National Working Committee, with representatives from each working group, the DHET, and from the National Programme Coordination and Management Body, meets biannually to coordinate and synthesise the work of the working groups and make recommendations on Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes.

This is an occasional publication with news of the PrimTEd project that is published on this website and also distributed by email to people on the PrimTEd project mailing list.
Working Groups
In an intensive process of workshops undertaken in 2015 and 2016, a number of working groups were set up to develop recommendations and resources relating to literacy/reading (the Consolidated Literacy Working Group), mathematics (three groups dealing with number sense, geometry and mathematical thinking) as well as three cross-cutting groups to provide support to these discipline specific groups (Knowledge management, Assessment, and Work-Integrated Learning).

New readings on literacy and reading
The field of literacy and reading has over the last half century been a scene of controversy and debate, particularly in the English speaking world. Some of these debates are now on their way to being settled and this list of readings and presentations about literacy, reading (and numeracy and mathematical skills) includes some of the latest neuro-cognitive research on how people read, learn to read and how it impacts on their cognition.
