A critical review of the School Support Project’s Grade 3 and 6 Literacy and Numeracy assessments: A report prepared for the Maskew Miller Longman Foundation
The Maskew Miller Longman Foundation (MMLF) embarked on a School Support Project in 2008, with the aim of assisting schools in their core duty of delivering quality teaching and learning.
This involved the development of an effective, sustainable model of best practice of curriculum implementation. Among other developmental activities, assessments were developed to measure learner achievement in grade 3 and 6 in Literacy and Numeracy at various points in the project.
JET Education Services (JET) was appointed in 2011 to review the English medium grade 3 and 6 Literacy and Numeracy assessment instruments, with the aim of formatively assisting MMLF to strengthen the instruments and the assessment process. In order to achieve this, the consistency of the assessment process (i.e. reliability), and the appropriateness of the content being assessed as well as the procedures used to achieve the aims of the project (i.e. validity) were studied.
